Research Team Members
Steve Parkes
Dr. Steve Parkes is the director of the Space Technology Centre, leading research work on spacecraft on-board data-handling networks (SpaceWire), planet surface simulation and autonomous lander navigation, and digital signal and image processing for satellites.
He is the technical leader of ESA's SpaceWire working group and is the author of the ECSS E50-12A SpaceWire standard. Dr. Parkes is also the director of the NERC Satellite Receiving Station and the Managing Director of STAR-Dundee, a University of Dundee spin-out company which provides services and equipment to support organisations using SpaceWire for space applications.
Craig Ramsay
Craig Ramsay is a software engineer within the Software Engineering Tools team and is currently working on the "Software Developer's Right Hand" project, developing a tool to support detailed design documentation activities. Mr Ramsay is also a Teaching Fellow within the School of Computing where he leads delivery of Software Engineering taught modules and he is currently undertaking a part-time PhD, also in the area of software engineering.
Iain Martin
Dr. Iain Martin is a research lecturer working on planet surface simulations to develop and test planetary lander systems. Research projects which Dr. Martin is involved in include the ESA Lidar GNC study, the generation of simulated Martian surfaces (PANGU) and the ESA NPAL contract. He is also responsible for generating artificial surface images of Mercury within a vision-based planetary lander study, and for software driver development for SpaceWire devices in standard and real time operating systems; Windows XP, Linux, VxWorks and Analog Devices VDK.
Martin Dunstan
Dr. Martin Dunstan is a post-doctoral research assistant working on the
visualisation of simulated planet surfaces and spacecraft using OpenGL,
simulation of LIDAR images for GNC landing and orbital rendezvous
manoeuvres, and the development of a hardware chip for feature
extraction and tracking to support vision-guided planetary landers.
He is also working on FPGA designs for SpaceWire development and validation such as the SpaceWire Conformance Tester.
Stuart Mills
Dr. Stuart Mills' responsibilities include developing software tools
for a range of SpaceWire equipment as well as SpaceWire device driver
development for both Linux and Windows operating systems. Dr. Mills
also developed a real-time driver for SpaceWire on the Mosaic-020 DSP
board written in C and ADSP21020 assembler and was awarded his PhD in
the field of high-level protocols for satellite on-board networks at
the University of Dundee. This research included the use of TCP/IP and
other currently available protocols over SpaceWire, and the creation of
new protocols for use on such networks.
Chris McClements
Dr. Chris McClements is a post doctoral research assistant working on digital electronics systems for data processing systems and spacecraft on-board networks for SpaceWire. Chris is experienced in FPGA and ASIC designs and has worked on SpaceWire interfaces and routers for many mission payloads using SpaceWire. Dr. McClements other roles include development of test and development boards for prototyping and development of SpaceWire systems.
Ray Manston
Ray Manston is a research assistant working on digital electronics systems for data processing systems and spacecraft on-board networks for SpaceWire. Ray is experienced in hardware design and has worked on much of the equipment developed at the Space Technology Centre for use in test and development of SpaceWire systems.
Stephen Mudie
Mr Stephen Mudie is a software engineer for the Software Engineering Tools team. His work currently involves the development of the Software Developer's Right Hand, a software tool designed to aid the software development documentation process.
Alan Spark
Mr Alan Spark is a software engineer for the Software Engineering Tools team. His work currently involves the development of the Software Developer's Right Hand, a software tool designed to aid the software development documentation process.
Neil Lonie
Neil Lonie is responsible for management of the University’s Satellite Receiving Station. The Station is one of a range of high-technology facilities funded by NERC and provides data reception, archiving and dissemination services for Earth Observation satellites. The data are used to support research across a wide range of environmental science areas. His duties include supervision of operations and staff, primary contact for users, partner groups, funding body, etc., system maintenance, coordination and participation in development activities including antenna system design, manufacture and installation, finance management, preparation of NERC reports, funding bids, project proposals etc.
Andrew Brooks
Andrew is a Software Engineer within the Satellite Receiving Station.
Jon Bowyer
Jon is a Software Engineer in the Satellite Receiving Station. His main responsibilities are the maintenance and further development of software and systems for the ingest, processing, management and dissemination of satellite images.
Jon previously worked on SpaceWire projects within the Space Systems Research Group and for STAR-Dundee Ltd.
Paul Crawford
Dr. Paul Crawford is currently a research assistant working in the Satellite Receiving Station on various areas, such as tracking and orbit determination software and the design of telemetry receivers.
Les Moonlight
Les is a technician in the Satellite Receiving Station.
Drew Doig
Drew is an operator in the Satellite Receiving Station.
Bruce Isabella
